Pensioners' Incomes Series
The latest national statistics on The Pensioners Incomes (PI) Series produced by the Department for Work and Pensions were released on 7th May 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The Pensioners' Incomes Series 2007-08 is the latest edition of the annual Pensioners' Incomes (PI) Series. It contains estimates and interpretation of trends in the levels and sources of pensioners' incomes in the UK, based on two household surveys. Information on the latest year (and the eleven preceding years) is based on the Family Resources Survey (FRS), while historical trends are examined using the Family Expenditure Survey (FES). The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 10th June 2008.
The key points from the latest release are:
- In 2007-08 the average net income for all pensioner units (pensioner couples and single pensioners together) was £295 after housing costs (£322 per week before housing costs).
- Between 1998-99 and 2007-08, average net income after housing costs increased by 38 per cent. Before housing costs the rise was 25 per cent.
- Average pensioners income has grown faster between 1998-99 and 2007-08 than average earnings, which increased by 11 per cent during the same period.
- Recent growth in average income has been driven by continued increases in benefits, occupational pension income and earnings.
