Employers and the workplace pension reforms: Top line findings from desk research conducted in April 2008

Working Paper No. 66

by John Leston and Andrew Wood

This desk research was commissioned in early 2008 to inform the communication of forthcoming pension reform to employers. It comprises a review of the existing evidence at that time on how employers currently behave in relation to pension provision and considers how employers may behave in 2012, following the introduction of new obligations on employers to automatically enrol their employees into a workplace pension.

The research draws upon a range of sources, including what were at that time unpublished findings from research commissioned by Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). These have subsequently been published, see DWP research report no.’s 545 and 546.

The review is presented in PowerPoint format and comprises slides presented to DWP policy colleagues in April 2008.
