Investigation of the gaps in individuals' National Insurance records

Working Paper No. 61

Debbie Collins, Camilla Neville and Marie Thornby (NatCen) and Rita Patel (DWP)

This research examines the characteristics of individuals with the largest gaps in their National Insurance (NI) records to date, who are due to reach State Pension age around 2010 and 2025. The research explores what these individuals were doing during these gaps in their NI accrual.

The report details the methodological development (including feasibility study) and findings of a telephone survey undertaken by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). The survey involved 1,205 interviews with adults of working-age. The analyses of the data were conducted in-house at the Department for Work and Pensions.
