Wealth and Assets Survey Employer Pensions follow-up: Feasibility report

Working Paper No. 48

by Joel Williams and Hannah Carpenter

The Wealth and Assets Study (WAS) is a large quantitative longitudinal study (representative of individuals in households) part-funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to collect detailed information on pensions, savings and wealth. As with other surveys collecting detailed financial information is complex. Those conducting and commissioning WAS employ techniques and highlight areas for exploration to enable the production of robust information.

This working paper forms part of these explorations. It presents findings from the Employer Pensions follow-up study conducted by BMRB Social Research on behalf of the DWP. The report assesses the feasibility and merit of collecting information from employers to complement and validate (consenting) WAS respondents' occupational pensions details.

WAS respondents were eligible for inclusion in the employer follow-up survey if they: took part in WAS fieldwork in its first four months (July to October 2006); were employees; and were eligible to be members of their employer's occupational pension scheme.

Employer data was collected via a postal/web survey and matched to the relevant WAS main stage individual information. The latter was collected via face-to-face interview.
