Encouraging and Maintaining Participation in the Families and Children Survey: Understanding why people take part

Working Paper No. 6

By Miranda Phillips, Catherine Woodward, Debbie Collins and William O'Connor

This qualitative study was conducted with people who have participated in the Family and Children Study (FACS) - a large longitudinal study which has been sponsored by the Department and Inland Revenue since 1999. This project sought to explore the reasons why people (continue to) participate in FACS or to withdraw their co-operation from the survey, and to inform the development and refinement of panel maintenance strategies. It will be of interest not only to researchers working on FACS but also to those working on, or thinking about, panel maintenance strategies on other longitudinal surveys.
