Research Methods for Policy Evaluation

Working Paper No. 2

By Susan Purdon, Carli Lessof, Kandy Woodfiled and Caroline Bryson

This paper gives a brief overview of some of the main evaluation methodologies used within the DWP, especially the evaluation of active labour market policies and programmes. The main focus is on the questions which can be answered by process and impact evaluations - why they might be carried out and the possible research methods used. It looks at the extent to which the research design is influenced by the parameters of the policy/programme and its timetable, and outlines who might be included within an evaluation.
