This paper provides both a short and long term framework for research to help understand the processes that link low incomes, deprived neighbourhoods and adverse outcomes for children across generations. As well as considering the case for new data collection, it explores the potential, and limitations, to build on existing studies through data enhancement or data linkage between different types of data. This work was commissioned jointly by Department for Work and Pensions, HM Treasury and the Social Exclusion Unit.
