Details

The survey is based on a representative sample of employers who have recently used the Jobcentre Plus vacancy advertising service. Telephone interviews took place between 13th March to 2nd May 2012. The questionnaire was designed to gather strategic insight to inform service improvements.

Where relevant, the results are set in the context of the findings of previous surveys, such as the 2009 DWP Annual Employer Survey [1] and the UK Commission for Employment and Skills employer surveys [2]. However, it is important to note that the sample sources for these surveys and the detailed questions asked differ and therefore the results are not strictly comparable.

The Department for Work and Pensions is using this research to inform improvements to its service offer for employers. In particular, strengthening the service offer to small and medium businesses by raising awareness of the support available from Jobcentre Plus and making it more visible. The high level of reported satisfaction presents opportunities to extend the reach of Jobcentre Plus services, in terms of the types of jobs employers advertise and the range of services they use.

The research suggests clear ways to approach the transition to Universal Jobmatch (the Department’s new internet recruitment service that is due to be launched in Autumn 2012). The Department will use the responses that provide insight into employers’ experiences, preferences, expectations and concerns relating to internet recruitment to inform the design of the service and the way it is marketed to employers. The results also suggest the Department needs to:

  • focus on those employers who already use the internet for recruitment (65% of employers)
  • increase awareness of the internet service and the features it offers (20% of employers are unaware that Jobcentre Plus offers an online service)
  • improve the quality, accessibility and functionality of the current digital service to meet increasingly sophisticated expectations.
