This report presents the findings from a qualitative research project carried out by consultants BMRB for the Pensions Client Directorate (PCD). The research was designed to understand intermediaries’ current role and their information needs concerning pension provision in a way that could inform the communication strategy for the forthcoming pension reforms.

The research consisted of 50 face-to-face depth interviews conducted with a range of intermediaries including accountants, actuaries, independent financial advisers, lawyers and pension consultants. The research specifically examined: intermediaries’ relationship with employers and their perceived influence; the information sources currently used by intermediaries; and the information needs of intermediaries prior to the implementation of the workplace pension reforms in 2012.
