The economic basis for the regulation of pensions
David McCarthy and Anthony Neuberger
This research report provides a review of the different types of pension plan, the main regulations that affect them and a review of what the regulations are designed to achieve. The authors examine the robustness of the justification for regulation, and the consistency of approach between different types of pension, and between pensions and other closely related products, such as insurance policies, long-term savings plans and occupational share option schemes. The report goes on to highlight key policy issues and draws out the principles that the authors believe should guide regulation in the area of occupational pensions.
