RR 586 Pathways to Work: the experiences of longer term existing customers Findings from a survey of 4-7 year incapacity benefits customers in the first seven pilot areas
The Pathways to Work pilots were introduced for new and repeat Incapacity Benefit (IB) claimants in three Jobcentre Plus districts in October 2003 and a further four Jobcentre Plus districts in April 2004. Following the extension of the programme to existing IB claimants with claims of around one to three years in February 2005, Pathways was extended to existing IB claimants with claims of around four to seven years in April 2006. This latter group of longer term existing customers are the focus of this report.
This report presents findings from a large scale face-to-face survey of 1,692 longer term existing customers in the original seven Pathways to Work pilot areas. This study was conducted by the National Centre for Social Research, and provides a description of the customer profile, their experiences of involvement with Pathways to Work, their work and other outcomes. The report also presents specific analysis on the experiences of customers aged over 50 and those customers with mental health conditions, and draws comparisons with customers with claims of one to three years throughout.
