This is the first DWP publication to report on the Department's productivity. It follows from the final report of the Atkinson Review on measuring Government output and productivity for the National Accounts (January 2005). The paper reports on measures of social security inputs, outputs and productivity between 1997/98 and 2007/08, following the principles set out in the Atkinson Review. In addition to presenting these important, but narrowly defined, measures, the paper discusses the productivity measures in the context of overall DWP performance and examines the relationship between DWP labour market and social security activity.
