The British Lone Parent Cohort and their Children 1991 to 2001

Research Report No. 209

By Alan Marsh and Sandra Vegeris

This report is based on the findings of a unique ten-year study of lone parent families in the UK. The study began in 1991as a nationally representative survey of 940 lone parents who were then re-interviewed in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2001 as part of the DWP Programme of Research into Low Income Families (PRILIF). The aim was to discover the extent to which different pathways through lone parenthood were associated with different outcomes for the children of lone parent families. By 2001, 548 parents with 1,100 children remained in the study.
