Self-employment as a route off benefit
Research Report No. 177
By Karen Kellard, Kate Legge and Karl Ashworth
There are several New Deal programmes that are available to help potential entrepreneurs make the transition into self-employment. However, self-employment remains a relatively uncommon destination for individuals leaving benefit: less than one in ten claimants in the UK leave benefit to start a business in any one year.
This report provides a review of recent published research on self-employment as a route into sustainable employment for benefit claimants and a detailed analysis of labour market transitions of claimants derived from the British Household Panel Survey and New Deal for Young People, New Deal for 25 Plus, and New Deal for 50 Plus databases.
