Low/Moderate-income Families in Britain: Work, Working Families' Tax Credit and Childcare in 2000
Research Report No. 161
By Stephen McKay
This report presents findings from the second year of a representative survey of Britain's lone parents and low/moderate-income couple families with dependent children. The main focus of the research is to examine the effectiveness of work incentive measures such as the Working Families' Tax Credit (WFTC) in enabling low/moderate-income families with children to obtain and remain in paid employment. The research also looks at issues of family welfare such as housing, health, morale, optimism, hardship and debt. This is the first of three reports on the findings of the 2000 survey - it focuses on work, childcare and the initial effects of WFTC. Forthcoming reports focus on family change and child support, and incomes and hardship.
